Caffeine isn't a drug, it's a vitamin! (Joey) « Thread Started on Jun 22, 2009, 12:34pm »
Morning Coffee, the one thing that either kept Mac awake or woke him up to start another day. And this day was no different to any other, he had no time to stop for coffee, or even food but then he was no robot and considered eating a break all be that a short one but still something to take his mind from the lab and goings on around the place. His order never varied that rasin oatmean and maple syrup. Mainly the high light of his day he thought as Mac turned the corner and entered his home away from home and the lab. For all the times that creatures of habit had been injured or killed in cases with the lab. Mac could never give up his own routine.
Possibly a stupid thing but then he was only human. The warm inviting smell of coffee hit him as he made his way though the few people gathered around the place towards the counter. Relieving himself of his jacket Mac took up a seat as he smiled towards the waitress. Her sweet face returned his smile as she nodded, "Usual Mac?" She asked him as Mac just nodded. Did he ever differ his order no, and being that creature of habit they could almost have it waiting for him when he arrived. Though only his food order stayed the same, his hours and arrival times changed daily.
The coffee was soon placed in front of him as he smiled again appreciating the coffee more than ever. It was what was going to get him though the day and not only that probably half the night. Mac sat pondering over the cases at the lab, and what he would do first of all that day. His fingers wrapped themselves around the coffee cup as he felt the heat nearly burn into his hand. It was perhaps the only thing that told him he was awake as he sat and looked around the faces of the people there.

Thunder. That was one of the few things that made him remember vividly the day he had actually almost lost his life, and had indeed lost a leg. He had spent months in the hospital after that, and still had the memories of it. Last night it just happened to have thundered all night long, which kept Joey Curtis up all night trying to block it out. Now he was sitting in the coffee shop he had come to with his sister-in-law and niece after he first moved here, trying to forget.
In front of him was a bowl of frosted flakes and a steaming mug of coffee. It was his breakfast of choice, though he usually got it at home with some orange juice instead of coffee, but today he wanted to get out. He was even wearing his prosthetic, his crutches no where in sight. It helped him to forget what happened if he seemed normal to other people. He never complained openly about it, but he really didn't like to be crippled and he wished he was still overseas.
He was sitting by the window eating his food slowly. He was looking at the skies overhead. It was partly cloudy at the moment, and it was hard to believe it had rained and thundered practically all night long. He was so preoccupied with his thoughts, he didn't see his boss enter the coffee shop. He had already been in the shop for half an hour and had gone through one cup of coffee, and he really didn't have any intention of leaving and going to work, though that was where he was eventually headed.

Last night had been one of the worst for crime scenes, the rain destroyed any evidence that they had and the thunder made people jumpy. For the most part though Mac was at home, either sleeping or sitting watching the cooking channel that Adam had fixed up for him. Probably sleep was the best thing he could have done however typical Mac he sat waiting for the morning or just long enough before he appeared back at the lab and could pass that he had actually caught a few hours sleep. Though for the most part Mac was a zombie running of coffee.
For once Mac had time to himself away from the lab, though he would probably make his way there after he had eaten, though it was truly the last placed he wanted to be. Sure he loved the place, his home away from home but there were times when the cases stacked up and nothing seemed to go anywhere. However that never stopped anything before he tried to convince himself as he took a sip from his coffee.
As Mac glanced around his eyes fell upon a familiar face, Joey the go too guy for weapons analysis. A genius in his own right and a former Marine a stand up guy in Mac’s opinion. Deciding on not being as antisocial as he might be if he was running short on time and seen as how he was out side of work Mac held his coffee and oatmeal in his hands as he made his way over towards Joey. He smiled towards him as he spoke. “Hey Joey, mind if I join you?” He asked politely, after all he could always tell Mac to get lost and he would, maybe not the lost part but Mac would disappear none the less.

He had felt bad for those who had to work last night. He rarely worked nights and he never got out to the crime scene anyway, but he knew that rain washed away evidence. He had gotten about an hour of sleep before the storm woke him up at about 2:30am. Eventually he had gotten up, had a long shower and then watched a movie on his laptop. Both had helped to block out the noise of the thunder, but they only went so far and he could still see that moment on that truck.
He was so consumed in his thoughts he didn't notice Mac coming towards him. He was still jumpy after the storm as well so when Mac said his name he was notably startled. When he saw who it was however he relaxed a little bit before saying "Hey Mac. You're more than welcome to join me" Mac Taylor was also a former Marine, and he had very high standards when it came to the work of his lab, or so he had been told. He hadn't really been able to have a conversation with the man, even though they worked in close contact.
He was dressed as normal with a pair of khaki pants with a button up shirt over a white t-shirt. The button up shirt was rolled up just past his elbows, as usual, showing a couple of scars from flying shrapnel after the blast. The white scar over his left eyebrow was also a result of that cause, but he told most people who asked that he had received it while horsing around with his little brother while they were children. "So how are you today Mac?" he asked studying the older man.

It wasn’t a good time to be out but still it was just the job he told himself, the one thought Mac had apart from the case was a steaming hot cup of coffee that he could have, while he sat and watched some tv when he got back. Accept it turned out to be a dance with death with the coffee at the lab and the flickering of a computer screen that kept him company for half of the night. The utterly sad part of his life that ended up he was either working or at home trying… yes trying to catch a few hours before starting the cycle again then next day.
Mac didn’t mean to startle Joey though be his look, it seemed Mac had succeeded. Mac smiled feeling foolish for startling Joey though he had no idea what he would be jumpy. “Thanks, sorry I didn’t mean to startle you at all.” He said as he took a seat across from Joey placing his food and coffee down. Having high standard was one thing, but then life never really lived up to expectations and the Corps was a lot different to life, things seemed to move better and have a better flow of things.
Mac took a note of the scars Joey had, he had most definitely seen more action than most. Mac shrugged grinning slightly as he thought about. “As good as ever, tired, and well in a good mood considering the night last night.” He said, “Hell of a storm, never thought it would let up for today” He added thinking about how he was dreading working in the rain today. “And how are you, again sorry for startling you. You seem jumpy, can I ask why?” He said, if people were jumpy around the lab it was probably a coffee over dose or something worse.

Usually Joey could sleep, if only for a few hours. That part he didn't have a problem with, unless it was a night like the previous, or he was already remembering the explosion in his mind. It had been a terrible day, just a week after his 26th birthday and a couple of months before he was due to come home after his tour, but instead came home early. He spent a month in a chemically induced coma and five more months rehabbing. The whole time he was still in the service, and it wasn't until the end of his stay that he was discharged as he was still having trouble adjusting to the prosthesis, which he still has to the current day.
He hadn't meant to get startled, but not knowing anyone was coming up to him caught him off guard. When Mac apologized Joey shook his head and said "Don't worry about it. I was sort of drifting off and didn't realize you were approaching." He wasn't usually unaware of his surroundings, even on his worst of days, but the lack of sleep was making him just a tad less alert then he usually was at this time of morning.
He was surprised the storm had passed by now as well. It had just seemed to have disappeared after bring a couple hours of havoc to the sleepless city. "Yeah that was quite a storm. I thought for sure it would still be raining right now, not partly sunny" He said smiling looking quickly back outside before turning back to Mac. "Obviously I'm not in my best mood, but other than being quite tired I'm alright." he answered before thinking on what to say about the second part of his boss's question. He didn't like talking about the actual event, and had only told his psychiatrist and his best friend, who was also in the Marines and currently deployed overseas. "Thunder just sometimes brings back bad memories, that's all" he finally said, avoiding Mac's eyes
