Killing some down time « Thread Started on Jun 19, 2009, 4:06am »
For the first time in months, Daniel had taken the night off. Now that things were slowly getting fixed in his life, he was returning to his old habits. He wasn't working himself to death nor skipping out on nights rest to work. Daniel had avoid taking too much from his brother during that time. There was still a lot he needed to patch up but it was baby steps getting there. They were not things that could be changed over night.
Sure he made a promise he would not drink again but he still found himself hanging out at this bar now and then. Most of the time it was just to watch Mac play, he never took his brother up on that offer yet. He still wasn't drinking again and tonight he wasn't going to break that promise. There was glass of water in front of him. There was no band tonight, just a small crowd.
It was good for him to get out of the office and Mac's apartment. Sure it was a little noisy but it beat being stuck working. It felt good to be able to relax and let go like this. Daniel wore a black leather jacket, navy tee shirt and pair of old desert camo pants. It was just something he grabbed, wanting to be comfortable. Plus the bagginess of the pants hide the knee brace better than jeans.
His blue eyes glance around the bar, not too many people but still no one he truly knew was there. That was good, he was tired of the worried looks and all the questions about how he was doing.

Tonight was truly Joey Curtis's night off. Sure he actually had every night off, but usually he got saddled babysitting his young niece while her mother went to work at the emergency room as a nurse, and her dad, his brother, worked overtime as a lawyer. Tonight they were all out for the night, visiting his sister-in-law's parents. So in order to not spend the night sitting watching some movie, he made his way to the nightclub people had recommended at work.
He limped into the nightclub wearing dark blue jeans and a white and green striped polo shirt. For the first time since he had moved down to New York from Boston he wasn't using his crutches, preferring to look somewhat normal on his prosthetic. The former Marine usually thought the fake limb was too cumbersome, even though many remarked that his crutches would probably be worse. At least he had control when he was using his crutches, something he didn't always get with his plastic and metal leg. However he was trying a new one out, and it seemed to be working quite well.
At first he sat at the bar and ordered a beer and sat there and sipped it slowly, wanting to forget the blast that still traumatized his mind. But after about half of the glass he looked around the nightclub and spotted someone he had seen around at work. He got down and limped over to the older man, still holding his glass, and said "Hello. I'm Joey Curtis. I think I've seen you at work." He didn't know how else to put it, so he left it at that.

With the last name Taylor, Daniel found that he made enemies quickly or had people tip toeing around him so they would not upset Mac. Sometimes it was good to be the brother of the boss, others times it was the worst thing he could think of. There was so much he owed Mac and was thankful to learn he had a brother. The glass was lifted up and he took asip of the soda, he had been sitting there lost in his thoughts. At first he didn't noticed the man walking up to him.
However when he heard the younger male speak, his head turned to look up at him. Hearing the word 'work', he tried to place Joey. Daniel had a hard time keeping track of all the new faces in the lab. The last few months while he was recovering from the car crash then having his head smashed of some sidewalk while trying to save Adam, left him ridding a desk. "I think you are right about that. Daniel Taylor." He turned around to face the younger male and extended his hand. So far he was thankful that Joey hadn't made any comments about how he looked either too much like his brother or too little like him for that to be true. Then there were the odd person who mistaken him with his brother. Unlike his brother, he really didn't have the New York accent but had deep rough voice like him.

Family ties were often hard to live by. He knew that from when he went to school at Annapolis. It wasn't helpful to his grades and such that his father actually taught at the school, or at least had for a few years, before the war had broken out. When Daniel extended his hand, Joey took it in a firm handshake. He then sat down, his half empty glass of beer in front of him. "Nice to meet you Daniel. You're a detective right? I work in Ballistics." he said stating where he worked, just in case the man had a hard time placing him. He knew it might be hard placing him, as he wasn't on his crutches and he usually just stayed holed up in his lab.
"So how long have you been working in the city?" He asked. He had only been in the city a few weeks, and he always wondered how long other people had been around in the city. He often used those people for recommendations on where to go as well. Even though his brother helped him get settled, he often didn't have time to go out to eat and such, so Joey was going to rely on co-workers. He took a sip of his beer and waited for Daniel's answer.

The handshake was given right back, shaking Joey's hand as his was shook. Daniel's past and how he became a cop was far for normal. When it came down to it, Daniel was a genius but what he earned in his life to up to this point was mostly hard work and not knowing when to call it quits. He had a PhD in archaeologist and anthropologist then a masters in linguist.. He had started college at the age of sixteen and worked insanely through college until his time as a POW ended that. There had been many of times when he just sat back wondering how different his life would have been if things had been different. "At the current time that is my job. I used to be undercover until a bust went bad. Learned I had a brother during that time and he offered me this job. I wasn't always a cop though. Ballistics, that explains it. I thought I may have seen you around the lab a few times but I couldn't place where at." "I would say a year and half, that I've have been myself in this city. I worked two years undercover before my cover was blone. So almost four crazy years in this city... How long have you been here?" Daniel knew how much trouble loved to follow him around then adding the trouble Mac seemed to get himself into, it just made things a little rougher for him. If it wasn't for his cover being blown, he would have never learned of Mac and wasn't sure where he would have been. In the grand picture, he was happy with the way things turned out. Daniel took another sip of his soda as he sat there. His blue eyes looked back over at the other male, he seemed like a good person and friendly. It felt nice to just be sitting here talking about things like this instead of having to deal with work or the other issues in his life.

He had only known one life, which was a military one. He never had a steady home, always moving with his dad's new base assignments in the Navy. It was no wonder he entered into something related, though he had originally intended to graduate into the Navy. He fought for three years before losing his leg, and to this day he was still having trouble adjusting to normal civilian life. It helped he worked with the police, but his missing limp meant he couldn't see any action, which to him was probably the worst thing about losing his leg. At least he got to work with weapons all day. "I thought busts often went bad. At least that's what the news tells me. Yeah Ballistics keeps me busy in the lab. I used to be a US Marine officer, and now I'm confined to a lab. What a life." He said before taking another quick sip.
"Long time then. I've been in the city two weeks tops. I'm still not done unpacking from my move from Boston." he said with a small smile. He did enjoy living in a place that was slightly warmer than Boston. Then he was living with his younger brother, who was two years younger at 27 years old, his sister in law, and his little niece, who was almost five years old. It was nice living arrangements and at least he didn't have to pick up the tab of the rent all by his lonesome. That would mean he would have to work longer hours, or at least ask for more money per hour, which he knew he probably wouldn't get.

Daniel didn't have a home growing up, it was taken away from him when he was eight. Even before then, there was always traveling but his apdotive partents always mades sure things felt like home when they were away from it. When he started college at sixteen, it would only be another year before he was out traveling again. After college it was the same thing, traveling from one dig to the next. Until he was taken as a POW during a dig in the middle east. The Air Force offier he meant during that time would soon taken him after everything they been togther and gave him a home for a years. Daniel didn't know or understand family all that well until he learned of Mac being his brother. Things were rough for them still but it was a growing and learning process.
His career of digging things up ended with a bad back and knee. A few weeks ago he reinjured his knee and it was still giving him trouble. However with him hating doctors like he does, there wasn't going to be anytime soon that he seen another doctor about his knee. He would put it off until he could no longer do that. "I guess so, even though most of it was spent playing a drug dealer. I'm glad I never have to work undercover again. Much different than Boston, isn't it? I'm moved here from Colorado Springs." Daniel picked up his soda and took another sip from it.
