 Married to the job
« Thread Started on Apr 23, 2009, 12:54am »

Ever since the car crash and being cleared of the DUI charges and learning the few months he had lost, Daniel had burried himself in work. Working any open shift that wasn't taking, covering other people's shifts on top of his normal shift. He saw more of his office and the lab than he did of Mac's apartment. True to his promise, he had yet to touch another alcoholic drink. He even started to go back to chruch when he found the time to pay a visit.

This was a whole new Daniel well pretty much back to having nothing to do with his life but work. It was his way of escaping the daily life something he wanted nothing to do with anymore. He just wanted to work and then go home when he could and burry himself in a book He still talked with people but kept his distance from them. Only one he was really close with anymore was Mac. It was the only person he allowed himself to get close to again. Daniel was tired of living with the pain of living a normal life. Work was all that felt up for anymore, he had become numb to seeing this side of human life..

He was turned around in his chair, his back to his desk and door. His blue eyes looked out at the city. A light rain was coming down, his hand reached up and removed his glasses. He was back to wearing those again, his hair growing out again. It was shaggy again. Blue eyes watched the rain roll down the window. His mind was lost in thoughts about his choices in life.

Lately he had been second guessing himself and wondering if he could ever make up for the things he had done. This Daniel was a much more quiet and withdraw Daniel. Sure he still could talk someone's ear off when there was a point of interest in a case but he just moved around the lab, usually head in a folder.

She walked around the lab, so far nothing had happened and no one had asked her to go on a case, so she did a few things at the office to help where she could. It was her normal self, keeping a little busy so she could find something to help the other case. She looked around for a moment and then spot the normal man sitting at his desk, a man who had been there close to the twenty four hours on some days, which was a little over doing it, but she was letting Mac take care of his brother, however, they had not talked in a while, so she might as well go over and see how everything was going.

She moved through the lab, watching what she was doing and pulling off her lab coat and hanging it on a hanger outside. She wore a tight black shirt that was long sleeve, a pair of black slacks that were tight around her hips and legs until they got to her knees and then they flared out. The shoes she wore were closed toe and high heeled. She looked around as she got to his door and gave a smile.

"Well, this is no surprise. How ya doing Daniel?" She said to him as she entered his office, a smile on her face as she looked at his blue eyes, which she even had to say were very pretty.

Daniel had turned his chair back around, his head dropping down into his hands for a moment. It had already been a long day, he didn't sleep at all last night with his knee acting up like it was along with the fact there was too much on his mind. His hands ran through his hair before he removed his glasses and sat them down on the desk. Today he was wearing a dark navy shirt and black dress pants. There was a tie that matched the shirt nicely without drawing attention to it's self. Daniel had gone back to dressing up like this a little more now unless it was very early hours in the morning. Then it was something a little more causal if he changed out of the dress clothes. When he heard a familar voice, his eyes looked up and seen Stella there.

It had been a while since he had taken time to talk to Stella mostly because he was avoiding everyone and working so hard. Lately he just got tired of the oh I'm sorry.. and the pity looks he got everytime someone heard about what happened in his life. He just wanted that to end, he hated when people had worried and concern about him. It was overwhelming to him at times, he had gone from having barely anyone to look after him and worry to this lab and so many others. He had a feeling it was mostly from being Mac's brother but he wasn't sure. Though he was hoping that working like he was and not being as open would help ease all that up

"I'm fine, how are you?" Daniel had gone back to using his I'm Fine line even though he wasn't but it was something he had been good at covering up. Unlike Mac's hazel eyes, Daniel had got blue eyes like their mother. It wouldn't be long before his bangs would be covering up his eyes, much like they had when he first started to work here. His blue eyes looked Stella over before looking up at her. She looked good like most days.

She gave him the warm smile as she waited for him to see her and then walked further into the office, leaning up on the door some as she crossed her arms and looked at him. She knew better to believe he was okay, but she also knew better then to push the subject. She knew he did not want to relive that happened to him and she did not want to push him to tell her what was wrong, for fear it might cause him mental problems as she like to call bad memories. She nodded as he asked.

"Bored and a little busy, the day has been kind of slow, Mac has not given me anything and nothing has come up since that body I found in the park months ago, She had been lucky to find the suspect, but it was unfortunate that it had been the man's wife who was mad he had quit his job. It was a stupid case and a stupid motive, but it was one and it had happened.

Daniel was thankful that some people around the lab knew how to waited and see if they were welcomed to come in, instead of just walking in like they own the office. There had been people that he wished would have left him alone on certain days. Ever since his return, he had been getting looks from people who were close to Adam and blaming him for the way the younger male was hurting. It was something that had kept him in his office most of the day, he pretty much avoided them in the lab because he was tired of feeling guilty for breaking Adam's heart.

Since the car crash he was at the end of, losing his memory for a few months and going through the break up again with Adam had left him hurting and he was doing his best to become numb to those feelings. Daniel was just tired of hurting and feeling his heart being broken. There had been times when he wished his whole memory had been wiped out during that crash and never came back, he would give anything for a fresh start in this life. Not knowing what had happened or what was going on his life, an escape from it all.

"You can take my stack of papers if your that bored." He joked, Mac has pretty much kept him out of the field because of his knee. It just seemed the he wasn't the only one being kept out of the field by Mac. "I'm sure you will be back in the field before too long." Daniel grabbed his cane and stood up slowly. It had only been a month or so since the crash and his knee was still recovering from the damage. "Can I pour you a cup of cofffee or get you some water?" He asked as he made his way towards his coffee pot, needing some a cup himself.

She watched him as he moved around the desk, getting some papers and pointing to a stack, saying she could take over, she had to laugh a little, but other then that she was just standing there. She took in a breath and looked at him. He looked pitiful and she hated to see him like that, but she did not say anything, she knew he was possible dreading the time and hated having him look at it so. She knew about the thing with Adam, but she said nothing to him, nor did she even try to ask why, she had a feeling it was just something that had happened and that was it.

"Coffee is nice," She said walking in a little more and taking a seat next to the desk, waiting to be handed her coffee, which did not take long. She took a sip and smiled as it was strong, just how she liked it. She placed the cup down on the end of the desk, gave him a smile and glanced at the pile of papers. "Thanks, but no thanks... I am fine just walking around the lab seeing what people want." She said, laughing some as she looked at him and then back at the papers.

A nod of his head was given when Stella pointed to a stack of files. "Quite the lovely stack is it not? I'm trying for the world record for highest stack of files." He joked. Daniel had agreed to look over some of the older files and search to see if there was any new leads but most of them just needed someone to sign off on them to make sure everything was there. It was keeping him busy and his mind off things. There were a lot of things weighing on Daniel at the moment, dragging him down. It was hard coming into work, knowing there was a chance of running into the person's heart who he broke. Daniel couldn't handle hurting others all that well, sure over the being a cop he had become almost numb to hurting strangers but when it was someone he knew, it cause him pain and hurt.

Daniel poured her a cup of coffee and handed it off to her. His coffee wasn't the usually stuff they kept around here but a stronger blend. Strong coffee was something he loved, sometimes the stuff was beyond strong but today it was his favorite blend. "I was joking about helping out. I wouldn't wish on anyone." Daniel said as he poured himself a cup of coffee before limping back to his desk. After taking a sip from his cup, he sat it down on his desk. "Finding anything interesting to do while roaming around?" He asked. It was nice having someone to talk around who wasn't digging into his left.

She smiled as he commented on the stack and then she settled down a little so she could relax a little. She knew he was not doing good, but once again she did not push the subject. She stood and walked to the door and shut it, so it would give them some form of privacy.

"Please talk to me Daniel, I know something is bothering you and I just want to help," She was unlike the others in this lab, she was closer to Daniel, because had known him longer along with knowing his brother. She cared for both the boys, but Daniel was more of a kid in her opinion.

His eyes glanced up from the stack of files when he noticed Stella moving towards the door. There was a uneasy feeling coming to his stomach the moment he watched the door close. He wondered if she had planned to talk to him the moment she came here, if Mac asked her to check up on him or if it was a spur of the moment kind of thing. Either way he wasn't really up to talking, he had told Mac enough to keep him off his case for a while. A deep sigh was given when those words came out of Stella's mouth, he knew there was no avoiding it.

That was the thing he loved about Stella the most and sometimes it was a little annoying but her stubborness was something he had come to love at times. There was just something about Stella that he found easy to open up to about and he had a feeling she might understand this better than Mac had. "When I vanished.. I had a lead that my adoptive mother was still alive.. the one who I thought seen die in front of me. It's like she faked her death just to get rid of me. I tried for three months to track her down, pulled a lot of favors. It just feels like she wants nothing to do with me anymore.. that she faked her death just to get rid of me." He tried to explained, hoping it would make some sense.

That was thing that made him weak unlike Mac, he didn't know what it was like to have family who loves and cares for you. The one he had died in front of him when he was six so he couldn't remember what it was like all that much. It also made it hard for him to get close to someone because he was scared of getting hurt again. "Then Adam broke up with me, got into a car crash lots a few months worth of memory so it's really like Adam broke up with me twice seeing how I couldn't remember the first time around. Somewhere between that and being gone for those months, I started to drink heavily to numb the pain I was feeling.. That's over though, made a promise with someone about it." Daniel left out the part where he found his faith again and that he promised God he wouldn't drink anymore if he just allowed him to walk away from the crash alive.

"So you know the usual... I get hurt, get my heart ripped into more pieces and just finding away of getting through it all. But it's really something else after getting out of prison and thinking the only family you have alive wants nothing to do with me then only to find out my mother faked her death because and lied to me. Never came back to me, let go into foster homes where I was beaten and raped. So everything is just peachy at my end now." Daniel told Stella, only Mac had ever heard this much of his story. Daniel dropped down into the chair and stared at the floor.

She listened closely to everything he said. She had not planned on asking him this question, but she knew she had to help him. She had been in foster care for years after she moved to New York with her mother from Greece. She remembered the dreaded place, or to her, it was kind of dreaded since the man who took care of her had a smuggling ring. That was why she came to work here, she wanted nothing to do with crime so she came to Justice.

She put her hand on Daniel's hand and looked him dead in the eye. Her eyes were soft when it came to Daniel, something about him made her want to be softer. She liked Daniel, he had been around for sometime and he was Mac's brother.

"Daniel, I know how you fell when it comes to heart break and people not caring... But I promise you, no one here is going to hurt you, no one here is going to judge you... You have a family here and is someone here does hurt you, then let it roll over your shoulders, sometimes it is best to let them see it does not bother you... It does not give them that pleasure when you say you don't care what they say," Stella spoke with words she had kept true to herself. She had always kept those words to herself and now she was sharing them with him, because he needed them.

Daniel had a pretty big heart and could be rather senstive in a few areas. He was haunted by his past, all the things that happened to him weighed heavily on his shoulders and heart. There was a part of him that wanted to see the good in people. Before he got into this line of work, it was something he could easily do. He had demons that ate away at him, mostly because he didn't want people to know how bad his life truly was. Things had never been that great for him, trouble seemed to follow him around.

His eyes glanced over at Stella when he felt her hand on his shoulder. It felt a little better opening up to someone but he had just gone over the basic infomation. He idn't want to talk about things too much but had felt he given her enough to keep her from digging anymore. Unlike Mac, Daniel's softer side showed more. He didn't have the tough military background and had been broken down so many times that it was hard for him to build a tough shell to protect himself.

Hearing Stella's words was nice and it made him feel a little better but the break up with Adam had hurt and it was hard being around him in the work place. He wasn't sure how to act or what to say to Adam anymore. It was rough just trying to make small talk with the younger male. "Thanks for the advice and words Stella." It meant a lot to him that he had a friend like Stella, she often made sense when he needed it.

She smiled and patted his shoulder before she stood and walked to the door. She need to go and see if anyone needed her before she disappeared for the evening. She really wanted to just go home for the night, but that never happened. She went out to eat and then went him before the night was over.

"I am happy I could help Daniel... If you need me, you got my number and my address," She left the invitation open to him at all times. She turned out the door and head on out. She enjoyed helping people, so he would be no different. She moved down the hallway and to her own office where she stood and looked out the window for a moment. She thought about her past most the time, when ever she was alone. But she knew better then to do that to much, she needed to also just learn to live without the pressures of alive following her around.

She turned to her desk and set down, still clean of paperwork and still her beeper had yet to go off, which was fine with her. She set back in her chair and looked at the TV she had in her room. She did not put it on the news, in fact, she found something to keep her mind off the work she would possible be getting pretty soon anyway.
