 Starting Anew [Max]
« Thread Started on Jun 16, 2009, 10:13pm »

It was a slow day in ballistics. That is what the other people in the lab had told him, as it was only his second day working. Both of the days he had worked so far had been similar, and at the moment there was nothing to do. Therefore Joey Curtis, the new weapons analyst at the NY CSI lab, was sitting at his desk completing a jigsaw puzzle on the internet. There was a packet of open gummy worms lying nearby on the table, brought by the blond haired man as a dessert for lunch. Needless to say it was an hour after lunch and he was still eating them.

Joey's crutches were resting on the wall next to the small desk he was at. The need for these was apparent by his khaki pants being tied off about three fourths of the way down his right leg. He did have a prosthetic, but he often found it cumbersome and preferred walking around on crutches, so he kept the prosthetic in his locker. That way if he needed it for, for maybe shooting a weapon to test it, or something else, he had it accessible.

The former marine moved the last piece of his puzzle into the right position and leaned back in his chair smiling. Finishing jigsaws was one of the things that still made him extremely happy, even if the happiness only lasted a few minutes. He was just about to start a new puzzle when he heard someone entering so looked up towards the entrance to see who it was.

Max had finally been able to recover the weapon to her double homicide that had gone suddenly cold. However this guy was he was smart. The gun had been cleaned and tossed but there were other ways of finding out if a weapon was used. She brought everything down with her to ballistics. In one small box were the bullets from the scene. They had been cleaned after being removed as to match better. One wouldn't have guessed that those bullets had killed two people. However she still needed to get them down to ballistics along with the rest. Contained in that box as well were the shells left at the scene. An additional box was on it with the amunition left in the gun.

The unloaded gun was in Max's left hand, held losely by the handle. She had heard that there was someone new in ballistics. She was skeptical as she had been fond of Margo in a platonic sense. She was also somewhat skeptical around her co-workers now, a little more closed off than she had been. She was blending into the lifestlye here. It was depressing for her. Still life went on and she had to go on with it. Right now she just wanted to get this case solved and cleared off her desk.

Max opened the door to teh ballistics lab to see the new guy sitting behind a desk. She gave him a half smile as she put the stuff down on the desk. "Here's the possibly weapon from the Crawford-Marson case." Then she paused and offered a hand. "I'm Max by the way."

Joey watched the lady set the evidence on his desk. He was intrested in the case, and he hoped he would prove his worth with this evidence. He watched her offer her hand after telling him her name. He took her hand and shook it replying "I'm Joey. It's a pleasure to meet you Max." When he let go of her hand he investigated what she had brought him. The small hand gun was the obvious center piece, but he knew that she also had bullets for him to analyze against his sample.

"So fill me in a little more one this case" He said leaning forward in his chair to get a better look at the gun. He had be in the presence of weapons like these for a greater portion of his life, and had spent at least three years carrying around a big rifle in the war. Of course, now the only guns he was around were the ones murder suspects owned. He didn't own one. He didn't even really want one. He was satisfied occasionally shooting them at work. His leg prevented him from firing as much as the other people, but it was enough for him.

Max was one of the first people he had met here. He understood that the department he worked in wasn't needed unless the detectives needed a weapon analyzed, which no matter how many cases they had, there weren't many of. So this interaction was quite intriguing for him, and much needed in a way. He wanted to get to know his co-workers, and his shrink said it might help him, though he did have to watch that over-protective side of him.

Max looked over the new man on the job as she shook his hand in return. She watched with a critical eye as he took the evidence out, However he didn't seem the least bit nervous about it. It seemed to her that he had handled guns often in the past. Max herself was extremely familiar with firearms. She was a good shot and went to the range often. There was little else for her to do except improve her skill. She didn't mind it becasue it was something that she needed to do anyways.

"Both victims were found in an aly outside the Kit kat club, shot execution style. It was a very clean job considering how out in the open it was. Whoever this is knows what they are doing. This isn't an ameteur job, in fact one of my theories is that it is a job. Hopefully your analysis can help pull together some of the finer details we need for a rebuild." He had an almost military look about him. She knew a lot of men who had been in the service before coming into the Savannah PD. She leaned against the wall next to the desk as he looked over what she had brought.

"So, where did you come here from?" she asked. "How do you like New York." She heped he wasn't from here or else she would sound like a fool. Max still had trouble discerning the minor accents of the north that distinguished one area from another. Still she was just attempting to start some conversation. She hadn't really spoken to anyone in a while beyond a few polite words.

He tried to think of the first time he had fired a gun. It might have been when he was eleven and his father took him to the firing range, but he just couldn't remember anymore as everything from his childhood seemed the same. He had preferred archery anyway, and still occasionally went to a archery range to spend some time there. Of course he needed to find a new place to do that hobby, but he wanted to get settled into the city first before he started disappearing to shoot some arrows.

"Sounds like a professional to me, though it could be anyone with a mild form of weapons training as well." He said looking at her. He was remembering a case similar to this one that he had seen in Boston. He didn't remember who it turned out to be though. "Well anyway, I'll do my best to give you what you need to hopefully catch the bad guy." he added. He hoped they would catch the guy, and that he would have a part in it. No matter how many cases he had helped in Boston, he still felt that he needed to prove himself again.
e
"Well let's see. I was born in Newport, Rhode Island, but I lived in San Diego, Honolulu, and Annapolis before I turned 18. Most recently I was up in Boston." He replied. He left out the part about the war as he didn't want any looks from people. They would find out about his record anyway. Not that it was bad. "New York is interesting. I came here once for Fleet Week as a child, but living here is totally different." He responded to the second part of her question before asking "How about you? You sound like you come from down south somewhere"

Max stood and waited as he went looked at what she had brought. She knew she probably could have been friendlier, especially to someone new. Still she just couldn't find it in her to even try to connect. Still she felt very alone now. She couldn't talk to Adam, she just couldn't. That was part of the problem as he had been her closest friend here. However in the end all the lying had just hurt too much.

"I'd say. We still don't have full background on the vics as the IDs they had were fakes. I'm thinking this could have even been contracted, a hired hit. Though I have no idea why as yet. Its kind of an odd place to have a job like that done, I guess thats what is really throwing me. Its so well done but it was just done in the worst place."

"I was born in South Carolina but I was on the force in Georgia, Savannah in particular. I thought I was headed for a promotion but instead I got shiped up north, nepotism. I joined when I turned 19 and got my degree in Criminal justice online. I had never been here until I moved here. It was disconcerting when I first got here but I'm getting used to it quickly. It's strange what a lonely place it is despite how populous it is."

She seemed a little cool towards him, though he was sure it wasn't because he was the new guy. At least he hoped that wasn't the reason. He wasn't the most sociable person in the world in general, a fact he was working earnestly on, so he could sort of understand if it wasn't due to him being new. That aside he opened the box with the unused ammo from the gun and nodded. He would analyze these after shooting a sample. He would compare the markings to see if this was the gun used, which would bring them one step closer to catching the murderer.

"It does seem odd. But then again, I've only been here a couple of days and this city has already thrown a couple of curveballs at me. Then again, I've lived a pretty straightforward live up until a couple of years ago, so I'm still getting used to living a life where I don't have a set path" he said. Obviously children usually had the paths set for them by their parents, or at least he did, and then the military dealt with the rest. Up until the point he had been injured.

"That bites . I've visited the city several times before coming down here, as my little brother lives here. And of course Fleet Week always fasinated me" he said. He had also participated in it once while he was in the Marines, and that had been fun while it lasted."What is it like down in South Carolina and Georgia? I've always wanted to go down South, but I've never had the chance to." he asked. He had never even been to Florida. The furthest South he had gone on the east coast was Washington D.C., but he had always wanted to go further.

Max smiled a little when he said how he always wanted to visit the south. That was her home and she missed it. No one ever really asked about it though most of the time she didn't like to think about it. It was easier not to re-live the tougher times down there. Mainly what she had lost and what she hadn't had the courage to keep.

"Yes, its really lovely down there. If you ever get the chance you should take at least a weekend and go down there. I miss it, I haven't been there in a few months. Its much warmer down there. That is something I definitely miss in the winter, but you said you lived in Honolulu so you know what I am talking about. It is so much colder up here. I was warned but I didn't really know what they were talking about. I guess you could say I didn't believe it. Well I learned fast." This was followed by a light laugh.

"How long have you been here for?" It occured to her that he could be very new to the area. She at least could lend a helping hand if he was floundering. She knew she had been before she knew Jackie and Adam.

He saw her small smiled out of the corner of his eye. He was glad he had asked a good question, or at least he hoped it had been. He listened to what she told him about her home. If he really had a home it would be Maryland, as he spent ten years living in Annapolis. Provided four of those were spent at the Naval Academy as a student, but even the six years were longer than anywhere else.

"I probably will eventually. It's just hard to find the time to get out of here with everything I have going on. Plus I wouldn't know what to do with myself down there." He said before adding "Honolulu is warm, but I've spent time in a way warmer plae than that. Of course I also had the luck to spend a lot of time in places where it does get cold, and I'm a Northern boy at heart." When he said the first part he looked back down to the evidence from looking up at her. He wasn't ashamed of serving, but he knew some people didn't agree with the war, so he wasn't going to bring it up.

"Just over a week, but I'm living with my brother so adjusting is going quite well. I just have to finish unpacking, but knowing me, that might take a little while. Especially if I'm kept at work late." he said smiling. This city was something to get used to, and for now he had everything covered.

Max looked down at the evidence she had put there for him to look at. Now that it was out she wasn't sure what to dowith herself. There was no real reason for her to stay fown there in Ballistics. She tried to stay at the precinct or out on the street as much as possible. This had done her a lot of good as far as her reputation went. She was moving up in status in New York. She was working hard to present herself as hard working and professional.

Naturally this was going well for her as she had put her mind to it, her soul into it. Her goal was to get the promotion she didn't get when she was in Georgia, and she felt she was well on her way. It wasn't like she had much else to do other than work. She had also taken up some other hobbies on the side to entertain herself when she wasn't working. For the first time she felt that she was really living in New York, rather than just standing by.

"I should...." she started but wasn't sure how to finish. She meant to say leave but she wasn't sure if she should stick around and wait for the evidence. There wasn't anything in particular that she had to do at the moment.
